Demons and the Fall of the Angels

The Catholic claim

Some angels freely rejected God and became demons. Satan and the other fallen spirits tempt humans but remain creatures under God's sovereignty. Exorcism and spiritual warfare belong to the Church—not to entertainment occultism.

Biblical evidence

Scripture presents the devil as a murderer and liar, a tempter of Jesus, and an enemy who prowls. Christ's authority casts out demons; the Cross disarms principalities and powers.

Tradition and magisterium

The Catechism teaches the fall of the angels and the reality of Satan. The Church's rites of exorcism are regulated; curiosity about demons is spiritually foolish.

Catholic demonology refuses dualism: evil is not an equal rival god. Christ's victory is decisive even while the struggle continues in history.

History and development

From the Gospels through the Fathers, the Church practiced deliverance and discernment. Modern media sensationalism is not a source of doctrine; episcopal norms govern solemn exorcism.

Common objections

Modern people cannot believe in demons.

Fashion is not an argument. The Church holds Jesus’ own teaching and ministry regarding the demonic, which cannot be dismissed because it feels archaic. 'Modern people don't' is sociology, not a refutation of the claim.

Demons explain away human responsibility.

Temptation never removes free will. Most sin is our own choosing; demons can encourage evil but do not force it. Catholic moral theology refuses the excuse that 'the devil made me do it.'

Exorcism is medieval superstition.

The Church investigates natural and psychological causes first and reserves solemn exorcism to trained priests under a bishop—precisely to avoid superstition. Caution and ritual are not the same as credulity.
