Faith and Science

The Catholic claim

Truth cannot contradict truth. Genuine scientific inquiry studies God’s creation; faith names the Creator—without forcing Genesis into a lab notebook or science into a substitute religion.

Biblical evidence

Genesis presents an ordered creation made by God's word. Psalms and Wisdom praise the Maker through studying the heavens. Paul says what can be known about God is visible in the things he made—faith and honest inquiry both honor the Creator.

Tradition and magisterium

Augustine urged humility in reading Genesis; Aquinas defended secondary causes. Modern papal teaching treats careful cosmology and evolutionary theory as compatible with creation when the soul and divine causality are not denied.

Fides et Ratio holds that truth cannot contradict truth. The Church welcomes genuine science and rejects both fearful fundamentalism and scientism.

History and development

Conflicts over cosmology and evolution teach interpretive humility: Scripture teaches religious truth; secondary causes can be studied without expelling the Creator.

Common objections

Evolution disproves Genesis.

Genesis teaches theological truths about creation, fall, and dignity. Catholic teaching allows non-literalist readings of the six days while affirming God as Creator and the special dignity of the human person. Genre matters; conflict is often misreading.

Science is the only path to knowledge.

That claim is itself not a scientific result. Logic, ethics, aesthetics, and metaphysics are real knowledge domains science presupposes. Scientism smuggles a philosophy in while denying it is philosophy.

Miracles violate science.

Miracles are not claims that science is false; they are claims that God can act beyond ordinary secondary causes. Science studies regularities; it does not forbid a Creator. Exception and rule are not the same category.
