The Catholic claim

Vatican II re-presented the apostolic faith for the modern world. Read in continuity with prior teaching, it deepens mission, liturgy, and ecclesiology without inventing a new Church.

Biblical evidence

Christ promises the Spirit will guide the Church into truth until the end of the age. Acts 15 applies apostolic faith to new circumstances. The Great Commission sends the Church to teach all nations—councils serve that mission without replacing the Gospel.

Tradition and magisterium

The major constitutions re-present the deposit for a modern world. Benedict XVI’s hermeneutic of reform in continuity remains the standard guide.

Vatican II is neither a new religion nor disposable. Read with the prior Magisterium, it deepens mission and liturgy in the same apostolic Church.

History and development

Reception of Vatican II remains contested between rupture and continuity readings; the Church’s official path is reform in continuity with the prior Magisterium.

And well I know that they will exult; I do not mean delighted with this tribute, but solely on account of the preservation of the truth, according as they delivered it. For such a sketch as this, will, I think, be agreeable to a soul desirous of preserving from loss the blessed tradition”
